Periodontics

What is Periodontal disease?

Periodontics is a dental specialism that diagnoses and treats gum disease, whether it’s early stage or advanced. The treatment itself involves thoroughly cleaning the teeth and root surfaces from calculus, plaque, toxins, and diseased tissue.

Gum disease is caused by a build-up of plaque and bacteria at and below the gum line. There are two different types of gum disease - Gingivitis and Periodontitis. Gingivitis is the mildest and most common form of gum disease, and it can be reversed. It is normally identified by inflamed and bleeding gums.

If left untreated however Gingivitis can quickly develop into Periodontitis which is more harmful and can lead to tooth loss. With severe case of advanced gum disease your teeth may start to appear longer as the gum recedes. You may also feel your teeth are looser because the gums are not keeping them firmly in place.

Why it is important to look after your gums?

The aim of treatment is to remove all harmful material and toxins from the affected root surfaces. If left alone, this harmful material will inevitably cause further destruction of bone and supporting dental tissues.

Without strong and healthy gums, your teeth are incredibly vulnerable and likely to fall out as the disease progresses. Nowadays, it is widely accepted that saving teeth instead of removing them is always the priority.

Depending on the stage of your condition, a Specialist may be able to reverse the damage caused to your gums. If your case is more extreme, we will stabilise the condition and discuss the options available to replace teeth that cannot be saved.
